Bird Not Getting Any Better, Exploratory Surgery an Option

NEW YORK - Greg Bird has returned to New York from Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, awaiting examination by another round of specialists this week.

And if there are still no concrete answers about his season-long right ankle injury, the Yankees' lefty-hitting first baseman might be headed for exploratory surgery according to general manager Brian Cashman.

"Obviously, there's something going on that we haven't been able to get our hands on," Cashman said on Monday. "And worst-case scenario, you do maybe an exploratory surgery to find out (because) sometimes diagnostic testing doesn't show it."

Bird's bone bruise "is healed" Cashman said, but he's still experiencing pain after having a recent cortisone shot.

It's a scenario reminiscent of Mark Teixeira's bone bruise late in the 2015 season, which went undiagnosed as a fracture for weeks. …
