NORTHVALE -- The police chief is advocating for backgrounds checks for all borough employees and volunteers.

Currently borough code requires all sports and recreation employees and volunteers, 18 years of of age and older, who work with minors to undergo a criminal history record background check through the Division of State Police.

The borough would like to broaden the scope, Councilman Michael Small said.

"I would like borough ordinance that would include all. I don't think it's prudent for the borough to move forward [with background check ordinance] without doing background on any specific employees," Police Chief William Essmann at June 12 council meeting. "Not to exclude or target, but to make it fair for all."

The police department would not conduct the background checks. According to state law, a town can create an ordinance requiring background checks for any or all potential and current employees or volunteers. …
