Pequannock Group Takes Survey of Local Wildlife

The environmentally curious recently met at Pequannock's Woodland Lake to conduct a "mini" bio blitz, a quick survey of the various types of wildlife found in and around the town's lake.

The event was sponsored by Pequannock's Environmental Commission.

Bio blitzes generally run 24 hours, but the mini event held April 30 lasted four hours, just long enough to provide a baseline of the conditions of streams and other environs around Woodland Lake, said Kathleen Fitzgerald, the local watershed ambassador for parts of Passaic, Bergen and Morris counties.

Fitzgerald led the group which ferreted around in a neighboring stream for macro invertebrates. The group found around 100 macro invertebrates.

Most of those discovered, said Tom Andrea, secretary of Pequannock's Environmental Commission were species tolerant of pollution. …
