Bergenfield Receives $1 Million Grant for Turf Field Project

BERGENFIELD - A $1 million grant from New Jersey's Green Acres program for construction of an artificial turf field will "go a long way" toward giving youth athletes much-needed running room, Mayor Norman Schmelz said on Tuesday.

The $2.6 million project, planned for the 25-acre Twin Boro Field -- also known as Vivyen Field -- would add two pro-sized soccer fields, which could be converted for football use. It also would include baseball and softball diamonds.

Borough Administrator Corey Gallo said officials have not decided how to fund the balance of the project. He said the borough would have to seek another grant or borrow the money.

"Our ultimate goal over the long term," Gallo said, "is to rehabilitate Twin Boro Field so that it's a useful recreation complex."

In its current state, officials say, Twin Boro Field is seldom used except for periodic pickup games. …
