Tobin: Fire-Damaged Church to Be Rebuilt

A Union City church that was badly damaged in a fire more than three months ago will be rebuilt and restored in a $5 million project, Cardinal Joseph Tobin, Archbishop of Newark, announced on Saturday.

A 2-year-old boy was killed in the March 4 fire, which started in an apartment building and quickly spread to the Saints Joseph and Michael Catholic Church on Central Avenue.

"I know that the Union City community continues to feel pain from the events of March 4," Tobin wrote in a letter being given out at Masses this weekend. "I met many of you the night of the tragedy and we shared our fears, asking Christ the Redeemer for guidance and support. Today, I am happy to report that we will rebuild Ss. Joseph and Michael Church."

The church repairs will take about 16 months to complete and the cost will be covered by insurance, Tobin said. …
