Rutherford, 'Borough of Trees,' Buys Plantings

Article excerpt

The Borough of Trees is looking to live up to its name -- Rutherford's borough council recently approved a contract to buy and plant more trees.

The trees will come from Eaton Farms at a cost of $14,105. After receiving a grant earlier this year, the Shade Tree Commission put together a two-year tree planting and maintenance plan in keeping with state Department of Environmental Protection grant requirements.

Councilman Mark Goldsack, liaison to the Shade Tree Commission, pointed out that this is important to do even without the grant.

"We are the 'Borough of Trees' and living up to that name is important to us in town," Goldsack said. "Anyone that has driven around town can see that we have a lot of trees and we take pride in that. We are planting trees in an effort to maintain canopy along with our tree team on the DPW."

As of Aug. 20, 156 trees had been planted so far in Rutherford including 86 purchased through the grant. Not every tree is able to survive the stress of moving, though, and four of the newly planted trees have died, said the borough's tree maintenance supervisor, Greg Goumas.

A total of 32 trees have been cut down in 2017 and 40 more are scheduled to go, Goumas said.

"Sometimes trees need to come down, maybe it is because of disease or sometimes they are just not viable, it has to happen," Goldsack said. "When we got the grant we saw an opportunity to maintain the tree canopy as well as replace and exceed what was taken down with new planting."

The DPW's tree team works to maintain the trees that are already in town and has pruned 145 trees with 213 more to come by year's end, said Goumas.

Through the grant, the borough must plant at least 300 trees. It is split into four different planting seasons, each spring or summer and fall for two years, Goldsack said. Those weren't the only stipulations though. …
