Fair Lawn Teen Fends off Burglar with Baseball Bat

FAIR LAWN -- A suspect who allegedly attempted to burglarize a home on Ivy Lane and fled after a 16-year-old hit his arm with a baseball bat on Thursday is still at large.

At 4:22 a.m., Fair Lawn police officers responded to a residence for a reported burglary in progress, said Sgt. Brian Metzler in a news release. A 16-year-old resident told officers that he discovered an unknown male standing in the entrance of the kitchen when going to get a drink of water.

The teenager went into the other room, while being followed by the burglar, fetched a baseball bat, and struck the suspect in the upper right arm, said Metzler.

After being struck, the suspect dropped the items he had taken from the home - $160 of cash and two passports - and fled. …
