Bergenfield's Cooper's Pond Hosting Derby

BERGENFIELD -- For the first time in about 15 years, a fishing derby will be held at Cooper's Pond.

The free event, at 9 a.m. Saturday, will feature face-painting and food. Mayor Norman Schmelz said a portion of the street in front of the pond also will be cordoned off for amusement rides.

Sponsored by Bergenfield Elks Lodge No. 1477, the event is made possible thanks to an ongoing effort by the borough to clean up the pond.

"The jewel of Bergen County," as the mayor calls it, has nonetheless had problems with litter and poor oxygen circulation, which can lead to noxious smells, algae growth and even fish kill.

To address that problem, the borough recently installed three aerators in the pond to avoid stagnation. Public Works superintendent Philip Neville said the devices will sustain the pond's aquatic life for years to come. …
