Linda A. Duty Died Oct. 23, 2017 Courageous Cancer Fight Punctuated by Empathy

Article excerpt

Linda A. Duty fought cancer with courage, grace and dignity; when the cancer came back for the third time, she didn't get mad, she got funny.

"She made a bucket list in 2011 and stand-up comedy was one of the things she wanted to do," said her husband, Ronald A. Michel Sr.

Ms. Duty, of Millvale, was instrumental in starting the new pet ministry at First United Church of Christ in Millvale. Several days before her death, her pastor commissioned her as minister of the pet ministry.

Ms. Duty, 56, died Monday after a nine-year battle with uterine cancer.

When the cancer recurred, "she fought it every time and never complained," said her husband of 16 years.

Ms. Duty's first stand-up comedy routine was performed at her church. That led to appearances at other venues, and on the PCTV community access channel.

"She even got paid gigs," Mr. Michel said.

Ms. Duty told stories and joked about her life, her family and her battles with cancer, said her pastor, the Rev. Alice Lindsay.

"She talked about finding humor in tough circumstances, and people related," Pastor Lindsay said. "She was self-deprecating and would joke about herself and about her hair falling out. The comedy was healing for her and for the people who watched her perform."

Ms. Duty grew up in Shaler and graduated from Shaler Area High School. For 36 years she worked as a medical assistant at UPMC St. Margaret. She retired last year.

Ms. Duty and her husband worked their way through the bucket list of things she wanted to do. …
