PEP Guardiola will have to consider spending in January if Vincent Kompany cannot prove his fitness.

Having decided against bringing in a centre-back in summer despite interest in West Brom's Jonny Evans, the manager admits City have been lucky Kompany's absence hasn't been too costly.

John Stones and Nicolas Otamendi have both started 12 of 14 games this season but Guardiola is not prepared to gamble on their fitness for the rest of the campaign.

"Of course we need Vincent and [Eliaquim] Mangala at a high level to give rest," he said.

"John and Ota can't play every game for the remaining eight or nine months, it's impossible.

"That's why we are lucky because in this month and a half they didn't get injured, they didn't suffer, I don't know what happened.

"We have Tosin but he's still young, and Manga, but not any more. …
