Husso Gets Call-Up as Blues Baby Boom Continues

Article excerpt

Not only was Ville Husso called up from San Antonio of the American Hockey League on Saturday, he found himself as next man up behind Jake Allen against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

He's here because the baby boom continues in the Blues' extended family. After registering his third road victory of the season in Friday's 2-1 triumph over Carolina, Carter Hutton was not at Scottrade Center for the Columbus game Saturday. Hutton and his wife are expecting their first child any day now.

Defenseman Carl Gunnarsson became a first-time father Wednesday, missing the Blues' game against Calgary.

Husso, 22, appeared in three games with the San Antonio Rampage this season, compiling a 2-1-0 record with a 2.69 goals-against average and a .927 save percentage. A native of Helsinki, Finland, Husso was a fourth-round draft pick by the Blues in the 2014 draft.

He was in the nets Friday night for San Antonio, earning No. 1 star laurels in the Rampage's 3-1 victory over the San Jose Barracuda. Husso turned aside a season-high 38 shots, facing eight Barracuda power plays, in the victory for San Antonio (6-1).

Husso was impressive in training camp with the Blues. In his only game action of the preseason, he came on in relief of Allen to start the third period against Columbus and stopped all nine shots he faced in a 3-2 overtime win Sept. 20.

Two days later, he played the entire game against Washington and stopped 27 shots in a 4-0 victory.

"I thought he had an outstanding camp here," coach Mike Yeo said Saturday. "I believe he's been in three games down there (in San Antonio), but last night he was outstanding. Doug (Armstrong) was at the game; he got to watch him play live. He's certainly deserving of this call-up and has a real bright future. Excited about him."

The Blues have had a roster spot available for the past week since sending Sammy Blais (San Antonio) and Ivan Barbashev (Chicago) to AHL assignments. …
