Anti-vaccine mother seeks judge's help

A suburban Detroit mother who served jail time for violating a court order to have her son vaccinated is asking a judge to prevent any future vaccinations. The Detroit Free Press reports that Rebecca Bredow's attorney Clarence Dass says she will have to convince an Oakland County judge that avoiding future vaccinations is "in the best interests of the child." Bredow, 40, opposes vaccines, but her ex-husband, the boy's father, wants the boy vaccinated. An Oakland County judge earlier this month sent her to jail for five days for ignoring a Sept. 27 order to vaccinate the child.

Obama called to jury duty * Barack Obama, as a former president, is perhaps the most high-profile and successful resident of Chicago but he's not above serving on a jury. He was recently called for jury duty in Cook County, the Chicago Tribune reports. Chief Judge Tim Evans told the Tribune that Obama was willing to serve, and that security accommodations would be made to allow him to do so.

Virginia GOP 'misgenders' Democratic candidate * A new campaign mailer paid for by the Republican Party of Virginia repeatedly refers to Danica Roem, a transgender woman seeking election to the state House of Delegates, as a man and accuses her of making her identity part of the race. The fliers, authorized by Roem's opponent for the 13th District seat, Delegate Robert Marshall, R-Manassas, include a section titled "Danica Roem In His Own Words" and a header reading, "Danica Roem, born male, has made a campaign issue out of transitioning to female."

Girl, 6, waits in taxi as mother robs bank, police say * Police said a woman robbed a bank on Long Island while her 6-year-old daughter waited in a taxi. Suffolk County police said Diana Marini, 28, entered a Chase bank in Islandia, N.Y., at 1 p.m. Saturday and gave the teller a note demanding cash. They said the teller handed over an undetermined amount of money and Marini fled in a taxi that was waiting for her. Police stopped the taxi and found Marini and her daughter inside. Marini was arrested on charges of robbery and endangering the welfare of a child. …
