Topeka High Uses Big Plays to Run Past Topeka West

Article excerpt

The tone was set right away.

On Topeka High's first offensive play, running back Jacquez Barksdale broke loose for a 61-yard touchdown run. That was the first of many big plays in the running game as the Trojans ran away to a 55-21 victory over Topeka West on Friday at Hummer Sports Park.

"That doesn't hurt," High coach Walt Alexander said. "We were pleased with that."

Ky Thomas ran for 275 yards and three touchdowns (7, 62, 40 yards) on 13 carries and Barksdale picked up 147 yards and two TDs (61, 15) on 10 carries in a 500-yard rushing night for the Trojans (6-1).

The Trojans had six runs of 20-plus yards in the first half, three going for 50 or more yards in building a 41-7 halftime lead. They also had runs of 32 yards and Barksdale's 74-yard TD called back by penalties.

"I thought our kids played well, played hard and got the victory that we needed."

Thomas had two more explosive plays, a 41-yard run and a 40-yard touchdown on High's opening series of the second half to conclude his night.

West (1-6) fumbled the ensuing kickoff, the Trojans recovered on the 30 and scored on a 23-yard pass from Da'Vonshai Harden to Jalen Blackwell and with a 55-7 lead turned it over to the reserves.

"We were pleased with our young kids when they got in the game," Alexander said. "They competed well, especially when they (Chargers) had their starters in and our young kids got to compete against them. They played real hard."

Chargers quarterback Hunter McDaniel completed 12 of 23 passes for 175 yards with two touchdowns of 69 and 6 yards to Elliot Mehrens, who had six receptions for 117 yards. …
