Pitt Plans to Open Grocery along Forbes in Oakland

Walk out of class at the University of Pittsburgh, and an array of fast food shops and restaurants are just a short walk away along Forbes Avenue and nearby streets in Oakland.

But what about a place to shop for fruits and vegetables? Or a spot to find freshly cut deli meat or cheese?

If all goes according to plan, Pitt by summer will open a grocery store in the heart of campus, converting a university-owned building on Forbes that once housed at 7-Eleven convenience store into a spot intended to fill a demand by students and others for healthier options.

The building at 3955 Forbes Ave. is footsteps from the William Pitt Union. In announcing the move Tuesday, the university said it expects the store will employ full-time workers and student help. The hours of operation are still to be determined.

Pitt said the store will stock organic and locally grown produce. It will have a deli, beverage options, dry and packaged foods, cereals and soups. …
