White House Chief of Staff John Kelly spoke about the Civil War this week saying, "The lack of an ability to compromise led to the Civil War." He further said that "men and women of good faith on both sides made their stand." This is wrong on so many levels.

First and foremost, no human being has the right to own another human being. All people are equal and all should be treated with dignity, respect and compassion. There should be no compromise on this point. But, actually, the North did try to compromise with the South. The Missouri Compromise, the Compromise of 1850 and the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 are all examples.

Quite simply, Southern plantation owners were selfish and wanted slaves in order to increase their revenues. They were absolutely not people of good faith. …
