THE recent BBC mini-series, Gunpowder, reminded us of the dreadful truths behind the forthcoming jollifications of November 5th when bonfires, fireworks and treacle toffee will be the order of the day.

Complaints have been made about the realistic depiction of the beastliness of the way in which the conspirators were put to death. The makers of the programme defended the showing of graphic detail on the grounds that it was truthful and merely portrayed events as they were in those times. Whether it was acceptable for such horror (and this was not make believe) to be portrayed on the screen is not for me to say, but there is a moral to the Guy Fawkes story and one which we would be well advised to note.

This is that the plotters well knew the fate that awaited them if their treacherous plans failed and this did not deter them. …
