PATERSON — The food pantry and clothing closet at the Father English Community Center are a total loss following a fire that broke out this morning in the basement.

At about 11:30 a.m., staff members saw smoke on the stage in the Bingo Hall and pulled a manual fire alarm, Richard A. Sokerka, director of communications, for the Diocese of Paterson, wrote in a news release.

All three buildings at 434-447 Main St. were evacuated to another Catholic Charities program location, El Mundo de Colores at 44 Ward St.

Firefighters received the call at around 11:32 a.m. and responded. No injuries were reported.

"Catholic Charities in the Diocese of Paterson is grateful for the quick and efficient response by the City of Paterson's Fire Department and for their quick work in responding to and putting under control a smoke condition," Sokerka wrote.

Fire officials told Catholic Charities officials they would be on the scene for an undetermined amount of time because of the overhaul needed. …
