K-State Finds Right Play for Game-Tying Conversion

LUBBOCK, Texas -- A great play must be saved for just this situation.

After scoring a touchdown with 42 seconds left in the fourth quarter, Kansas State needed to complete a two-point conversion to tie the score and set up overtime.

The Wildcats called their play, then Texas Tech called timeout. Out came the Wildcats again, and another Red Raider timeout. The third time was the charm when Skylar Thompson completed a pass to Dalton Schoen, paving the way for a 42-35 overtime victory Saturday.

"You only get one shot at it and 2½ yards doesn't count," K-State coach Bill Snyder said. "It has to be absolutely the right play or you have a problem. We had two different calls made and the one we finally settled on, they did a pretty nice job covering and we had to go to a third choice for the throw and obviously he made a nice throw and a good catch."

The third choice was the right call.

"That was the third play we called because of the timeouts," Schoen said. "There was a lot to think about but it was a great job by the coaching staff getting us into a play that was going to work because it was a chess match there with timeouts. It was a stressful stretch.

"I knew I wanted to get about three yards deep into the end zone. I was probably about two yards but Skylar did a fantastic job getting it to me early. He had complete trust in me coming out of my break and he put the ball right on the money and all I had to do was catch it."

"Dalton is sure-handed," said K-State running back Dalvin Warmack. "Anything you throw his way, he's going to catch."

Thompson scored the touchdown on a 1-yard sneak and expected another running play for himself or Alex Barnes on the extra point.

"I was kind of surprised we called a pass play," Thompson said. "I knew when they did that, they were telling me they had confidence in me. …
