THE idea of a weekend in the capital, would make me think of sightseeing, tourist haunts, hours of shopping on Oxford Road, maybe catching a show in the West End.

For many, many years, London has been the destination of choice for so many of those reasons, and still remains a massive pull to tourists. But what about the trendy people, the coffee drinking, Apple Mac-using hip generation? Well, you'll find them in Shoreditch.

Shoreditch is as bustling and vibrant as any of its more spruced-up central London neighbourhoods. But amid the original, more gritty and urban streets, and pavements you can't move for independent bars, cafes restaurants, boutiques and shops. And not forgetting the wonderful Brick Lane Market, packed with up and coming designers and fabulous food outlets.

For my stay in Shoreditch, I stayed at the heart of the area - The Hoxton, Shoreditch.

After traipsing along the high street with my case, past strip bars and kebab shops, buildings with graffiti art, following my phone navigation, I admit I felt as un-cool as humanely possible.

Luckily, my time in 'lost tourist' mode was cut short after a little walk from the tube to the hotel.

Through the huge glass doors, I was immediately in the hotel's foyer, which was littered with people buried nose-deep in tech products of all shapes and sizes.

Bare brick and roaring open fires greet you along with tempting beautiful armchairs, sofas and chunky coffee tables - it's just so inviting.

The friendly reception desk is small but well manned, while checking in I have a look round and notice the Hoxton Grill, an American comfort-food eatery, nestled perfectly behind a sea of MacBooks.

During my stay, I realised that this lounge area is constantly buzzing.

Daytime you have the coffee drinkers and the workers, by evening the place comes alive with the party goers and revellers, as well as the Hoxton Grill diners - there is a distinct Manhattan feel to the building.

It has an industrial theme, but the comfortable layout seems to be popular in these parts. …
