Haworth Officials Ask State for Help Fixing Up Aging Downtown

HAWORTH – Officials are hoping a New Jersey Department of Transportation grant will cover the full cost of a downtown improvement project that aims to fix some of the aging infrastructure in the business district.

If approved, the $442,311 grant would cover the entire cost of streetscaping for Terrace Street, St. Nicholas Avenue and Stevens Place.

The downtown project, which is estimated to cost $422,000, would add new concrete curbs, sidewalks, driveways, pavers, ornamental light fixtures and foundations, tree wells, a lighting control system and landscaping.

The upgrades are not only cosmetic, but a safety necessity as well, said Councilman Glenn Poosikian. He said many of the lights in the downtown don't turn on now at night and some of the older pavers on the sidewalk are no longer lying flat.

The Borough Council went out to bid in July for the project, but rejected the only bid that came in for being over budget. …
