Death Stalks the Cobbles in 'Brutal' Corrie

THE cobbles of Weatherfield have become one of the deadliest spots in soapland, with the murder count there now at 23.

In just five years, seven residents have been killed off in TV's Coronation Street.

And it seems the latest murders of Andy Carver and Vinny Ashford have ruffled viewers' feathers.

Almost 400 people complained about the slayings.

But producer Kate Oates responded: "There have always been dark murders, even dating back to the 1970s."

Even long-time fan Sir Michael Parkinson, 82, said the ITV soap had become 'brutal', after the most recent killings.

There was only a handful of killings in the show's first 15 years. They included Elsie Tanner's husband Steve being pushed down the stairs.

But for the past 20 years, murders average one a year.

Ms Oates said: "I hope viewers will see there is a balance of stories and other characters are giving that traditional warmth. …
