Flaherty: Sanchez Could Be the Next Pudge Rodriguez

NEW YORK – Gary Sanchez turns 25 next month, he's coming off an All-Star season and he's the youngest catcher in Yankees history to hit at least 25 homers in a season.

He was also called out by his ex-manager Joe Girardi this past summer for defensive issues, mainly on pitches that should've been blocked or caught.

"To me, he's Pudge Rodriguez waiting to happen," ex-catcher and YES broadcaster John Flaherty said, comparing Sanchez to the Hall-of-Fame receiver. "That being said, you have to find a way to do a better job with passed balls, blocking balls in the dirt, all of that stuff.

"But there's so much talent there that I think he's just kind of knocking at the door of being great behind the plate."

Speaking on Wednesday at Joe Torre's annual Safe at Home Foundation gala, Flaherty said he wished to be considered for the Yankees' managing vacancy. …
