No. 1 Pompton Lakes (15-4-2) vs. No. 2 Waldwick (17-3-1), 1

Someone will have to budge. No one has scored on Pompton Lakes' Jason Dubrovich or Waldwick's Lucas Mainenti during the tournament, as their teams combined for a 22-0 goal advantage. A matchup this close could come down to home field advantage. The Cardinals have grown to love the imperfections on Hershfield Park's grass with an 11-1 record there. The Warriors will have to adjust to win their third title in four years. The player to watch is Cardinals' senior Carlo Gonzalez, who's scored 25 goals this season and needs just two more to tie his school's career record. Yianni Ekonomides and Michael Magyar have also been catalysts on offense. For Waldwick, senior Christian Ballaera has helped his team immensely with speed up front. The Warriors are pretty balanced behind him with Dan Lee and Chris Borgese as other point leaders, and with Garrett Mironenko patrolling the back line.

The pick: Waldwick

No. 5 Mahwah (14-6-1) vs. No. 6 Newton (13-6-2), 2

Who could have predicted this? A pair of darkhorses have gotten hot at the right time to get to the championship game. Mahwah is a defensive-minded team that's leaned heavily on forward Malcolm Mashig. The senior has scored 18 of his team's 41 goals this year, though he has gotten help of late. Robert Taylor has three postseason goals, and Derek Ernst came through in the quarterfinal in double overtime to beat Ramsey. The Thunderbirds go for their first sectional title since 1985, but will have to defeat the defending champion to end that drought. Newton has been an offensive juggernaut over the last few weeks and has to feel confident after a 6-0 shutout of Pascack Hills in the semifinal. The Cowboys tied Mahwah (1-1) and lost (1-0) in two meetings this season in the Big North Patriot.

The pick: Newton

No. 1 Ramapo (18-2) vs. No. 2 NV/Old Tappan (14-3-3), 2

Just 13 days later, they meet again. To win a second straight title, Ramapo has to go through the team it defeated in the Bergen County final. …
