Large Pileup Shuts Down I-70

A multiple-vehicle crash Friday morning on westbound Interstate 70 in East Topeka closed the major gateway into the city just as early commuter traffic picked up.

The situation was under investigation, but Kansas Highway Patrol trooper TJ Wahlmeier said the five-vehicle crash began when a tire on a black truck blew out a few hundred feet west of the S.E. California Avenue bridge.

While trying to avoid the truck, which stopped in traffic, a black SUV collided with a maroon SUV, blocking both lanes of traffic.

The crash was reported just after 6 a.m.

In the ensuing traffic jam, two additional cars became stalled in the left lane east of the bridge when a tan SUV struck the back of another car. No one was injured in either crash, Wahlmeier said.

At one point, a semi pulling two trailers was stopped across both lanes of traffic just east of the California Avenue bridge. …
