Devils See Progress in Severson's Defensive Game

CHICAGO – Defenseman Damon Severson was in the lineup for the third straight game on Sunday night against the Blackhawks at United Center after being a healthy scratch for the only time this season. The offensive-minded Severson scored his second goal of the season in Saturday night's 2-1 win over the Panthers at Prudential Center. But it's been his defensive efforts where coach John Hynes has noticed improvement since his return, even if Severson was on ice for the Panthers' lone goal.

"He's defended a lot harder than he was defending consistently before he was out," Hynes said. "We just felt like there were times before he got sat out that there were some egregious turnovers. He's a better player than that."

However, Severson, who missed Tuesday's 3-1 loss to the visiting Blues, said he didn't see that rare healthy scratch as a referendum on his play. …
