The rise in protection from abuse orders in Allegheny County is well known to us at Neighborhood Legal Services Association ("Protection From Abuse Numbers Set Record," Nov. 8).

Our organization has provided free legal assistance to women - and this is predominantly a woman's issue - seeking protection from abuse from violent husbands or partners since the enactment of the Domestic Violence Protection Act in 1976.

Each year NLSA attorneys and our private bar pro bono volunteers handle nearly 3,000 PFA cases to afford safety to women and their families. As you mention in your article, the battle for safety isn't over with a PFA order; in fact, it's often the beginning of an escalation of harassment, violence or worse.

We've looked hard at what more we can do to offer support to these women. One result of this effort is our new Enhanced Assessment and Emergency Legal Assistance Program, a collaborative effort with the Women's Center and Shelter of Greater Pittsburgh, which offers expanded coordinated services and specialized support to victims. …
