ENGLEWOOD — Public safety, finances, transportation and the desire for a community center dominated the recent council candidates night.

The forum, hosted by the League of Women Voters, saw Glenn Coley and Katharine Glynn of the 3rd Ward and Horace Ragbir and Cheryl Rosenberg of the 1st Ward addressing questions from residents. Glynn and Rosenberg are Democratic candidates, while Coley and Ragbir are running independently.

Several in attendance Wednesday asked the candidates how they would improve transportation around the city, saying that buses don't reach some sections and those areas are cut off.

Coley said the city should push for the same level of services as other towns, such as Teaneck, where Coley serves as a police officer, and that he would like to bring back the city's discontinued trolley service. Glynn said the city could use a jitney service that would bring residents to the bus stops that already exist.

Others asked about the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail extension planned for the city, and how the candidates felt it would affect the city. Coley and Ragbir expressed concern, saying the city should study the potential impact, especially as some businesses will have to close to make way for the extension.

Rosenberg agreed that the city should have a proper impact study before moving forward. Glynn said she was in favor of public transportation and that other towns have similar train services that are not detrimental to neighborhoods.

The city's rising taxes were also a concern for residents, who recalled the more than 6 percent tax increase approved in this year's budget. The candidates all agreed that the city would need to monitor its spending and plan ahead for future budgets.

Rosenberg advocated for a long-term planning committee, while Ragbir said the city should stop hiring outside contractors for its planning and finances if it already employs people to do those jobs. …
