Chancellor Looking at Bleak Football Picture at KU

Musings at the mid-week:

-- My impression is that first-year Kansas chancellor Doug Girod is deliberate.

-- Quite likely a trait he learned as a surgeon.

-- Assemble as many facts and process as many variables as possible so not to make a rash judgment.

-- In addition, believe in your people.

-- With KU football, however, the data seems clear.

-- No progress, at least based on outcomes in which the Jayhawks have lost by double digits in all of their 2017 defeats, leaves little hope David Beaty can orchestrate a turnaround.

-- The bleak outlook is reflected in KU's attendance.

-- Also, there is the issue of athletic director Sheahon Zenger and the two coaches he has already hired.

-- Also, there is the effort to raise tens, even hundreds, of millions of dollars to facilitate a makeover to Memorial Stadium.

-- Bigger picture, long term, the future of football anywhere is sketchy considering concerns over head trauma.

-- Lots of variables, but little evidence the same leadership will advance KU football to the point it can compete favorably.

-- Not sure how that spurs boosters into donating.

-- Unless the biggest donors commit, much like David Booth did with his $50 million pledge.

-- Zenger has a strong background in fund raising, but the stadium project promises to be a big ask.

-- Showing support for a football coach struggling to revive the Jayhawks is, at least, a new approach.

-- Girod also did not waver on backing the principal figures involved in KU football.

-- So there is that, though I doubt many would have criticized the chancellor had he said additional information, and results, caused him to rescind his support.

-- Much can be inferred from only three football players being made available by Kansas State following its disappointing loss to West Virginia.
