'Field Trip' Takes BOMA to Charlotte

The Board of Mayor and Aldermen is heading out this week to attend the National League of Cities annual conference. The four-day program brings elected officials, industry experts and staff from around the country together to learn and exchange ideas.

This year it's being held in Charlotte, N.C., often dubbed "The Southern Wall Street." An array of seminars will include economic development, housing, infrastructure, technology, leadership and more. Trending topics will cover cultural and social issues along with financial sustainability and workplace support.

During interactive seminars, attendees will network and share best practices; it's an opportunity for our own town officials to talk about Farragut and discuss what we are doing right, and what challenges we have ahead. Guest speakers include Earvin "Magic" Johnson and former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, both of whom transitioned from previous careers to achieve new goals.

The entire board will be present; it's worth noting that they are elected as unpaid officials. They take time away from their own business or personal pursuits to serve and attend conferences like this. It won't all be work, however; there will be a little time for fun, too. Mayor Ralph McGill hails from Charlotte and has volunteered to show off his hometown.

Moving swiftly through other business, the board approved the ADA transition plan letter to TDOT, the new sinkhole ordinance and special event signage for Shop Farragut's holiday campaign. …
