The Pennsylvania Department of Banking and Securities is warning businesses to be on guard against a growing cyber threat known as the business email compromise.

Under the con, cyber-criminals pose as company executives - tricking employees with access to company finances into transferring money into the crook's account or releasing sensitive information.

Businesses can protect themselves by being vigilant about following a few safe practices, the department said.

* Look closely at the email address. Scammers often use spoofed emails that are hard to distinguish from the legitimate email account. For example: janeedoe@xyzbuisness.com vs. janedoe@xyzbusiness.com.

* Investigate the request before acting. Never transfer money or send sensitive information until confirming the request by phone or in person. …
