Minnesota won't host the 2022 world's fair

The state of Minnesota lost its bid to host what would have been the first world's fair on U.S. soil in almost 40 years when the organization that oversees the events voted Wednesday to make Argentina's capital the site of one planned for 2022-2023.

President Donald Trump's administration has sought to boost American interest in world's fairs, international displays of ingenuity that in the past brought the world the Eiffel Tower, the Ferris Wheel and Seattle's Space Needle.

But in its latest vote, members of the Bureau of International Expositions, based in Paris, picked Buenos Aires over rivals Bloomington, Minn., and Poland's third-largest city, Lodz.

School room named after young Jewish victims of extremist * A conference room at a Paris middle school has been named in honor of two Jewish boys who were fatally shot by an Islamic extremist in southern France more than five years ago.

The dedication of the room in memory of Arie and Gabriel Sandler is part of a broader effort to fight racism and anti-Semitism in France through education.

Samuel Sandler, whose grandsons were 3 and 5 when they were killed in an attack at a Jewish school in Toulouse, said Wednesday's naming ceremony was a "very moving" moment.

Next round of NAFTA talks underway * Mexico, the United States and Canada have begun the fifth round of talks on renegotiating the North American Free Trade Agreement.

None of the three countries' trade representatives or economy secretaries will directly attend the talks, which will formally open Friday and run through Tuesday. But the U.S. Trade Representative's office said Wednesday that 30 groups of negotiators are meeting in Mexico City this week.

Talks with upper-level officials were held this month at the Asia-Pacific APEC meetings in Vietnam.

Talks have stalled over American demands, including higher U.S. content for automobiles and a sunset clause that could force renewal of the pact every five years.
