NAT039 - (US-Obit-Charles-Manson) LOS ANGELES. x-14s. Cult leader Charles Manson, whose followers murdered actress Sharon Tate and six others in California in 1969, has died. He was 83. Manson steadfastly claimed that he never killed anyone, but prosecutors convinced jurors that he orchestrated the gory slayings by his followers -- known as the Manson family. In an A-P interview in August 1999, former prosecutor Vincent Bugliosi (boo-lee-OH'-see) said Manson's followers did not view him as being insane. ("..contact with reality.")
