Monica Hebner Makes Nike Cross-Country Final

Monica Hebner found herself in an unfamiliar position in the final 400 meters of the Nike Northeast Regional cross country race Saturday at Bowdoin Park in Wappinger Falls, N.Y.

The Bergen County and New Jersey state champion was in sixth place with only the top five being guaranteed a spot in the national championships Dec. 2 in Portland, Oregon.

"I went with 400 to go and gave whatever I had to try and get into the top five," said Hebner, who passed a pair of runners to finish fourth in 18:49.1 and become the second girl in North Jersey history to qualify for the Nike meet.

Hebner, whose time was the fastest ever run by a North Jersey runner in the 11 years the course has been used for the regional championships, will be joined by the North Hunterdon and Kingsway teams which went 1-2 in the girls race, as well as by future Penn teammates Chris Romero of Voorhees and Will Hare of Princeton, who went 1-2 in the Northeast Boys race. …
