1864 English mathematician and writer Charles Dodgson presented a handwritten and illustrated manuscript, "Alice's Adventures Under Ground," to his 12-year-old friend Alice Pleasance Liddell; the book was later turned into "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland."

1912 Andrew Carnegie, at 77, turned over all but $25 million of his vast fortune to the Carnegie Corp. for charitable and philanthropic distribution.

1917 The National Hockey League was founded in Montreal, succeeding the National Hockey Association.

1951 The 67-mile, $77.5 million western extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike was dedicated at the Ohio border with Gov. Frank J. Lausche of Ohio promising that his state would extend the expressway.
