Letter: Rodger Marshall Doesn't Realize GOP Tax Plan Is Unfair

Rep. Roger Marshall has taken to Facebook and his newsletter to brag about bankrupting graduate students.

By making tuition waivers "taxable income," the tax plan he just voted for will make it impossible for graduate students like myself to afford basic necessities. Even though I made about $10,000 per year as a stipend at K-State, Marshall has just demanded that I pay the same taxes as Americans making more than $70,000 - a massive increase in taxes that I, and most graduate students, cannot afford.

I have been lucky enough to find extra employment while I finish my graduate degree, which can cover the drastic tax increase the GOP has decided to burden me with. But how many thousands of students will be forced to quit their programs, give up on their dreams and abandon their research because of this plan? …
