Autopsy Shows Man Committed Suicide

A man barricaded in his home Jan. 24 during a law enforcement standoff west of Topeka committed suicide by shooting himself in the right temple, according to an autopsy report.

James M. Overton, 64, of 8732 S.W. 10th, was pronounced dead at 6:24 p.m. that day, said the report from an autopsy conducted by Shawnee County district coroner Charles Glenn.

A Shawnee County Sheriff's official said Overton barricaded himself about 3:45 p.m. Jan. 24 in his home, where deputies were trying to arrest him on an outstanding Shawnee County warrant charging him with aggravated assault, making a criminal threat, assault on a law enforcement officer, criminal restraint, domestic battery and interference with a law enforcement officer.

Authorities said they entered the house after 6 p.m. and found Overton dead. …
