One man was dead after a shooting early Monday in East Topeka, police said.

The shooting death marked the city's 28th homicide of 2017, tying the all-time record set in 1994 and equalled again last year.

Authorities publicly identified the man on Monday afternoon as Faustino Vasquez, 46.

According to Topeka police, the fatal shooting occurred about 12:50 a.m. Monday at 1222 S.E. Long.

Lt. Andrew Beightel said officers were sent to the scene after receiving a report of gunshots at that location.

Responding officers found a man suffering from a gunshot wound lying outside the residence, Beightel said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
