New Kensington chief to work for UPMC

New Kensington police Chief James Klein, who led his department during the investigation of the Nov. 17 fatal shooting of one of his officers, has accepted a security position with UPMC.

"Chief James Klein accepted a position as captain of UPMC Police and Security on Nov. 16 and will be a welcome addition to our security presence on the UPMC Presbyterian and Montefiore campuses," Gloria Kreps, a UPMC spokeswoman, said Monday in a statement.

Chief Klein informed New Kensington Mayor Thomas Guzzo of his impending departure on Nov. 16. He informed his officers the next morning, Mr. Guzzo said, just hours before Officer Brian Shaw was shot and killed after attempting a traffic stop.

Chief Klein has been with the department for 25 years and chief for for the past two, the mayor said. …
