The recent death of T.J. McGarvey marks the passing of a great man (Nov. 16 news obituary, "T.J. McGarvey: Driving Force Behind City's Vietnam Veterans Memorial").Marine and ironworker, he was the epitome of toughness. A gifted storyteller, he expressed a wonderful Irish sense of humor with a warm and generous heart. He was labor negotiator for Allegheny County and very loyal to county Commissioner Tom Foerster. Fiercely devoted to his wife and family, he loved unions and working people of all types.

T.J. was a great educator and supporter of the Philip Murray LaborInstitute at Allegheny Community College. When we first met there in the early 1980s, I told him about my strong opposition to the VietnamWar, but also my deep respect for veterans of that conflict. I was in the crowd when the Pittsburgh Vietnam Veterans Monument was dedicated, and he mentioned resisters with respect. That memorial deserves to be much better known and appreciated in this city. …
