Ramapo College President Hits Student with Car

The president of Ramapo College struck a student with his car outside the college campus in Mahwah on Friday, police said. The student sustained non-fatal injuries.

Dr. Peter Mercer was approaching the intersection of Magnolia Road and Ramapo Valley Road at 3:59 p.m. when he struck 20-year-old Kevin Murphy, who was on the crosswalk several feet from the side of the roadway, according to a copy of the police report. Mercer was in a school-issued 2016 Audi Q5.

According to the police report, Murphy admitted to wearing earbuds while crossing and told police he was "not looking at the lights" and didn't hear anything. Mercer told police the traffic light was green, but the sun glare was blinding and didn't see Murphy crossing until he hit him.

Murphy told police he had pain in his lower right leg, according to the report. Police at the scene stated in the report the bruising was visible. …
