Giancarlo Stanton's rejection of both the Giants and Cardinals has put the Yankees in play for the reigning NL MVP.

Now, it's up to the Yankees to either find a creative route toward landing the Marlins' slugger, or stick to their this-time-we're-serious plans of fiscal restraint, aimed at finally getting below the luxury tax threshold.

Stanton, 28, exercised his full no-trade clause on Friday, telling both the Giants and Cardinals that he wouldn't be headed to San Francisco or St. Louis in a trade.

According to an MLB Network Radio report, Stanton would waive his full no-trade clause to play for the Yankees, Dodgers, Cubs or Astros. And that puts the Yankees in a unique situation, one that an aggressive general manager like Brian Cashman would have to address with ownership.

And Cashman, who just agreed to a new five-year, $25 million contract extension, has talked Hal Steinbrenner into adding on payroll before, delaying the Yankees' oft-stated goal of getting under the luxury tax. …
