Downed Utility Pole Closes Route 4

Article excerpt

HACKENSACK — A multi-vehicle accident brought down a utility pole across Route 4 in Hackensack on Friday night.

The pole caught fire as it fell across Route 4 east near the Paramus border around 6:45 p.m. Wires extended across the westbound side leaving the highway closed in both directions for nearly two hours.

Around 9:10 p.m. all westbound lanes on Route 4 were open, while the right lane on eastbound remained closed.

Police turned traffic around on Route 4 west to get people off the highway near the Barnes & Noble.

An officer on the scene confirmed a car hit the utility pole but could not provide further information. William Schievella, spokesman for the Bergen County Sheriff's Office, said his department assisted with traffic control, but he could not provide information on any injuries. Hackensack Capt. Patrick Coffey could not be reached for comment Friday night. …
