Eagles Outlast Rams but Lose Wentz, Possibly for Rest of Season

Article excerpt

LOS ANGELES * The Philadelphia Eagles might have lost star quarterback Carson Wentz for the rest of the season even as they clinched the NFC East title.

Wentz threw for 291 yards and four touchdowns before leaving because of an injured left knee, then Jake Elliott kicked the go-ahead 33-yard field goal with 3:45 left for the Eagles, who beat the Los Angeles Rams 43-35 in a thriller Sunday to clinch their first division crown since 2013.

It was a key game between NFC division leaders that could determine playoff seeding. But it was a costly victory for Philadelphia. Two sources familiar with the injury told The Associated Press that doctors believe Wentz suffered a torn left anterior cruciate ligament and will miss the rest of the season and playoffs.

Los Angeles dropped to 9-4 but still leads the NFC West.

"I think if we play them 10 times, it would be pretty close every game," Rams quarterback Jared Goff said. "It comes down to at the end of the game who makes a play and who doesn't, and who takes care of the ball and who doesn't have dumb penalties and stuff like that. That ends up being the difference in the game. We did that and they didn't, and so hats off to them."

The Rams lead the NFC West by a game over the Seahawks. Those teams meet next weekend in Seattle. Meanwhile, the Eagles' attention now is on Wentz.

"I don't know anything yet until we evaluate him fully," said coach Doug Pederson, adding that Wentz will have an MRI on Monday. "It's just a report. You're speculating that he's going to be out. I was really blocked on the play so I've got to check out the tape tonight on the way home. He did get up a little hobbly. I knew something was up but didn't know the extent of it, obviously."

Wentz had a brace on his left knee as he was driven up the tunnel at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on a golf cart. He got off and hobbled about 30 feet to one of the team buses. …
