Mailman Accused of Stealing Checks on Bergen Route

A U.S. Postal Service worker was arrested by the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office after he allegedly stole a Bergen County resident's check and deposited it into his own bank account, authorities said.

Hector O. Tejada, 50, of Union City is facing forgery and theft by deception charges after an investigation by the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office, the Allendale Police Department and the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General revealed he had stolen nine checks from people along his route, according to a release from the Prosecutor's Office.

In September, a resident went to police to report that a state-issued check had been stolen.

Through the course of the investigation, law enforcement officials determined that Tejada, who worked out of the Dumont post office, had taken a total of nine checks worth $8,000 between March and October. …
