QB Bryce Petty Takes One More Shot with Jets

Article excerpt

Bryce Petty stood in the locker room last week as a backup quarterback. The Jets had just confirmed that veteran Josh McCown would start the final four games of the season and Petty was just trying to keep things in perspective.

"I'm young and I'm going to get my shot," Petty, 26, said Wednesday. "I know that for a fact."

Petty's next shot is coming much sooner than expected. McCown broke his hand in Sunday's loss to the Broncos and will have season-ending surgery. Petty will get another chance to prove himself as a viable quarterback. And this is probably his last chance.

Petty, a fourth-round pick out of Baylor in 2015, started four games for the Jets last season. But that audition didn't go well. He completed 75-of-133 passes (56.1 percent) for 803 yards, three touchdowns and seven interceptions. He never truly looked comfortable with his reads and progressions and had trouble getting rid of the ball quickly. He led the Jets to a nice win over lowly San Francisco. …
