The Trudeau Liberals snagged three of four seats up for grabs last night in byelections in four provinces.

The Liberals snatched a Conservative riding away from a former Harper-era cabinet minister, with Gordie Hogg's win over Kerry-Lynne Findlay in B-C's South Surrey-White Rock.

The Liberals also easily retained Newfoundland's Bonavista-Burin-Trinity, and hung onto Toronto's Scarborough Agincourt riding, where Jean Yip won the seat left vacant by her late husband Arnold Chan.

The Conservatives held onto their own safe seat in Battlefords-Lloydminster, Saskatchewan.

Last night marked a second byelection loss for Andrew Scheer since he became Conservative leader in May, but there was a marked improvement in the Conservative-vote share in the elections outside of B-C.(3)



Mounties are investigating the possibility that Sunday's fatal highway crash in Alberta may have been caused by a tire that came off a semi tractor trailer.

A 54-year-old man died after police say his northbound vehicle on the Q-E-2 Highway hit a guardrail near Ponoka.

Police say their preliminary investigation indicates a large tire may have dislodged from a southbound semi-truck and struck the driver before he hit the guard rail. (3)



Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne has followed through with a threat to sue Opposition Leader Patrick Brown for defamation.

The legal action stems from the Progressive Conservative leader's comments in September, a day before Wynne testified as a witness at a trial in Sudbury where two provincial Liberals faced Election Act bribery charges and were ultimately acquitted.

Brown told reporters he hoped Wynne would give answers about the scandal -- quote -- "maybe when she stands trial,'' and went on to describe her as a "sitting premier, sitting in trial. …
