CASE 81 * Ms. D and two children sleep in a darkened apartment with no hot water since the gas and electricity were shut off. Ms. D fell behind in utility payments; she also owes $2,000 in back rent and is facing eviction. She is the mother of a 7-year-old boy. Her brother, 15, also lives with her. Recently, Ms. D, 24, found out she is pregnant. She worked at a hotel in housekeeping but lost her job this year because she took too much time off to care for her ill mother, who has since died of breast cancer. To try to keep her son's spirits up, Ms. D pays to send him to after-school activities. Ms. D would be grateful for any donations this season. She could use help with rent and utilities. Her family could also use furniture, clothing, appliances and toys.
