Stallings: No Regrets Being Here

By his own admission, Kevin Stallings is a private person, but as a major-college basketball coach, he is unavoidably in the spotlight. He doesn't often care, however, for that glare to extend to his family or his life beyond the court.

At Pitt, his professional life has had an impact on his personal one. Stallings' wife, Lisa, and youngest daughter Jordyn still live in the Nashville area, where Stallings coached at Vanderbilt before joining the Panthers.

Such an arrangement hasn't been easy to deal with over the past 21 months, a time during which the Panthers have gone just 21-22 on the court. But, if you think that has Stallings questioning his decision to come to Pitt, think again.

"If there's a viewpoint I'm here sort of because I have to be or because I have no choice, that's just so erroneous," Stallings said Thursday. "I'm only here because I want to be here."

In an appearance on 93.7 The Fan Thursday morning, Stallings was asked, if he knew everything would play out the way it has - with six players leaving the team after last season in addition to four seniors graduating - would he still be where he is now. He was asked whether he is still having fun at Pitt. Stallings said 'Absolutely,' adding he is enjoying 'the heck out of' his team and living in Pittsburgh.

When asked to expand on those thoughts in advance of the Panthers' game Saturday against McNeese State, he cited the number of challenges he has withstood because of his desire to be with the program and his dedication to his post.

On the court, there was the whirlwind recruiting process on which he embarked earlier this season. In the span of 97 days, from early May until early August, Pitt received commitments from six players for this season, making up for the loss of five transfers and one disciplinary dismissal.
