Nebraska, Florida advance to volleyball final

Mikaela Foecke had 19 kills, Annika Albrecht and Briana Holman had 13 apiece and Nebraska fought off match point in the fourth set to beat No. 1-ranked Penn State in a five-set thriller in the NCAA volleyball semifinals Thursday night in Kansas City, Mo.

The fifth-ranked Huskers (31-4) will play No. 3 Florida (30-1) for the title Saturday night. The Gators eliminated defending national champion Stanford late Thursday.

The Huskers, who beat their Big Ten rivals for the seventh straight time, won the opening set 25-18 before dropping the next two, and then rallied to win the fourth 28-26 and force a deciding set. The Huskers took it 15-11 to advance to the finals.

Florida jumped to a 2-0 lead, winning 25-22 and 25-21 before fourth-ranked Stanford rallied 25-18, 25-18 to force a deciding set. The Gators closed out the victory, winning 15-10. (AP)

St. Louis FC rebuilding roster * It has been an active week for STLFC as it restructures its roster for the 2018 United Soccer League season.

With just five players - goalkeeper Devala Gorrick, defender Austin Ledbetter, defender-midfielder Tony Walls, midfielder Ivan Mirkovic and forward Christian Volesky - retained from last summer's 9-14-9 squad, new coach Anthony Pulis added six players, including two with St. Louis Scott Gallagher ties.

Goalkeeper Tomas Gomez (Webster Groves) is coming off two standout seasons with the Rochester Rhinos, leading the USL in goals-against average in both campaigns. Also back is defender Sam Fink (Edwardsville), who played for STLFC in its first two seasons before spending last summer with Oklahoma City.

Other signees: defenders Sean Reynolds and Phanuel Kavita, midfielder Austin Martz and forward Corey Hertzog, who scored 14 goals for Pittsburgh this season, earning second-team All-USL honors for the second consecutive season. …
