Small children crawled all over the Batmobile and exchanged fist pounds with Batman on Saturday to celebrate the holidays at the Topeka Rescue Mission.

Riding in a three-tire auto bike, Batman and Robin rolled on to the Rescue Mission grounds and were greeted by about 100 people, most of them children, who are residents at the Rescue Mission's Hope Center.

They were escorted by two Topeka police motorcycle officers and two Kansas Highway Patrol troopers.

Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt also attended the event.

The celebration had a "Holiday Heroes" theme, said Frank Henderson, deputy director of the rescue mission.

"Superheroes send a message to children that good prevails," Henderson said. "There is someone who cares about you. Children need to know they matter."

The National Information Consortium Inc. came up with the idea for the gathering, Henderson said. …
